Frequently asked questions

What is Pilates?

Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates, is a mind-body exercise system designed to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong. Pilates (1880-1967) was a German expatriate who first made his mark in England during the first World War. When Joseph Pilates immigrated to New York, the local professional dance community discovered that his conditioning techniques helped prevent injury and improve strength while maintaining long, even muscle tone.

Can anyone do Pilates?

No form of exercise is appropriate for everyone, but Pilates exercise is appropriate for the vast majority of people. If you have any physical limitations, a modified programme may be recommended.

Should Pilates replace my regular workout?

Pilates exercise is a musculoskeletal conditioning program. The workout is controlled and with no sudden jarring. It is ideal in combination with some kind of cardiovascular exercise and provides a great complement to weight training or athletic training.

Is Pilates like yoga?

In certain respects, Pilates does have similarities with Yoga. Both are considered mind-body methods of movement; both emphasise deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage the mind-body connection. The goal with Pilates though is to strengthen the postural muscles and achieve optimal functional fitness.

How often should Pilates be practiced?

Most people manage one session per week, with some enjoying two sessions. Many Pilates followers enjoy practicing at home in-between Pilates classes.

Can I do Pilates if I suffer from medical conditions?

Many people with medical issues find Pilates helpful in relieving their symptoms. Indeed, Pilates is often recommended by GP’s and other health workers as a component of a symptom management programme. However, it is important that you take medical advice and work with an experienced and suitably qualified instructor who is able to assess the suitability of Pilates for you. (Please see Pilates Plus).

What should I bring to Class?

Please wear unrestrictive, comfortable and stretchy clothing which allows movement. Layers (tops or possibly a light fleece when it is cold) are ideal to help you maintain a comfortable body temperature. You should wear socks during class. You may wish to bring a hand towel for extra head support. Some people find a towel useful to support their low back during exercises that involve lying face down on the tummy. You may also wish to bring water in a non-spillable plastic sports bottles if you like to drink during class.
